Principal Component Analysis of Geochemical Data at Gusev Crater
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: Since January 2004, the twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission have been able to investigate their respective landing sites thanks to the Athena Science Payload [1]. This scientific payload includes the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) instrument [2], whose role is to determine the elemental composition of martian soils and rocks. Due to a largely increased mobility compared to the Mars Pathfinder mission and thanks to their amazing longevity, Spirit and Opportunity have been able to drive several kilometres away from their landing site locations. Given the large number of APXS measurements (Table 1) multidimensional analysis [3] appears to be an adequate and original tool to investigate such a variety of samples. Thus, our Principal Component Analysis (PCA) performed on rock measurements at Gusev gives pertinent results, in particular concerning the diversity observed among the rocks of the Columbia Hills encountered by Spirit.

A Critique on Power Spectrum – Area Fractal Method for Geochemical Anomaly Mapping
Power spectrum – area fractal (S-A fractal) method has been frequently applied for geochemical anomaly mapping. Some researchers have performed this method for separation of geochemical anomaly, background and noise and have delineated their distribution maps. In this research, surface geochemical data of Zafarghand Cu-Mo mineralization area have been utilized and some defects of S-A fractal me...
متن کاملPrediction of mineral deposit model and identification of mineralization trend in depth using frequency domain of surface geochemical data in Dalli Cu-Au porphyry deposit
In this research work, the frequency domain (FD) of surface geochemical data was analyzed to decompose the complex geochemical patterns related to different depths of the mineral deposit. In order to predict the variation in mineralization in the depth and identify the deep geochemical anomalies and blind mineralization using the surface geochemical data for the Dalli Cu-Au porphyry deposit, a ...
متن کاملPrediction of dispersed mineralization zone in depth using frequency domain of surface geochemical data
Discrimination of the blind and dispersed mineralization deposits is a challenging problem in geochemical exploration. The frequency domain (FD) of the surface geochemical data can solve this important issue. This new exploratory information can be achieved using the interpretation of FD of geochemical data, which is impossible in spatial domain. In this research work, FD of the surface geochem...
متن کاملDetection of Mo geochemical anomaly in depth using a new scenario based on spectrum–area fractal analysis
Detection of deep and hidden mineralization using the surface geochemical data is a challenging subject in the mineral exploration. In this work, a novel scenario based on the spectrum–area fractal analysis (SAFA) and the principal component analysis (PCA) has been applied to distinguish and delineate the blind and deep Mo anomaly in the Dalli Cu–Au porphyry mineralization area. The Dalli miner...
متن کاملSynthesis of a spinifex-textured basalt as an analog to Gusev crater basalts, Mars
Analyses by the Mars Exploration Rover (MER), Spirit, of Martian basalts from Gusev crater show that they are chemically very different from terrestrial basalts, being characterized in particular by high Mgand Fe-contents. To provide suitable analog basalts for the International Space Analogue Rockstore (ISAR), a collection of analog rocks and minerals for preparing in situ space missions, espe...
